Film Screening Presented by the Westport Historical Society: “The Road Taken…The Merritt Parkway”

The Westport Historical Society will present a special screening of “The Road Taken…The Merritt Parkway” a new half-hour documentary by Westport filmmaker, Lisa Seidenberg on Thursday, October 23. Mixing historical information, personal anecdotes and rarely seen footage from Connecticut’s past, the film looks at the Merritt as an artistic work – the unique bridges, the landscaping and those infuriating twists and turns that gives the road its character.

First opened in 1938, the Parkway celebrates its 70th Anniversary this year. Featured in the film are Westporters Ann Sheffer, Alan Abel and former DOT Commissioner Emil Frankel, as well as a relative of Congressman Schuyler Merritt, for whom the parkway is named.

The filmmaker, who will be present at the screening, has made many films including a feature, ‘Pledge of Allegiance Blues” which was shown at the Sundance Film Festival. “The Road Taken…” will also be shown at the Avon Theater in Stamford on December 10.

The Westport Historical Society is located at 25 Avery Place.DVD copies of the film will be available for purchase. A $5 donation is suggested. Contact Sue Gold, Executive Director of the WHS: 203 222-1424 or the filmmaker, Lisa Seidenberg: 203 341-9655.
