If you happened to be driving by WHS during any
one of our four week-long summer sessions, you'd have found a lot of
happy kids playing games and having fun while they learned a little
about people and events in our history during this summer's fourth
season of Time Travelers. Due to the hard work of our
co-directors Sherry Copperthite and Erik Martin, this year was a
smashing success, not to mention our co-hosts Westport Continuing
Education, which handles all of our registration.
Almost 90 children participated, boys and girls ages 5-10.
Regular visitors to the summer program included Jeannie Walker, a children's
theatre director who facilitated the most fabulous dramatic experiences for the
children; Chef Cindy in the kitchen; Callie Hill, who talked about good
nutrition; as well as Olivia Yule, our own gift shop manager, making spirit
rocks. There were special field trips to Beardsley Zoo and Captain's Cove, The
Garbage Museum, Boothe Museum and Park, Downunder Kayaking, Rowayton Historical
Society, The Weir Farm, and the Wilton Historical Society.
The student volunteers who tirelessly came to play and
supervise with the children made it possible for us to accommodate all of the
children. The WHS thanks Erin Bliss, an assistant to the directors, along with
Rickey Springer (who started here 4 years ago), Yarden Orly, Shira Clement,
Logan and Emily Rosen, Elaine Miller, Ashley Leukart, Sarah Fox, Lee Wacker, and
volunteers from the National Charity League.
Lily's mom summed it all up when she wrote, "This program is
wonderful because of all of you." Overall, it was a super summer and a highlight
of the educational programs at the Westport Historical Society. |
