Hidden Garden Tour

Treat Yourself to Five fabulous Historic Westport Gardens

This year's tour truly defines and reflects the purpose and motto of the Westport Historical Society: "Keeping Westport's History Alive" . . . Because all the gardens selected for the Eleventh Annual Hidden Garden Tour have significant ties to Westport's history.

•  Epic Grandeur
A sweeping expanse of exquisitely groomed lawn, and specimen trees flank the approach to a pristinely preserved Tudor-style mansion built in 1929 for a leading industrialist. This seven-acre estate boasts rock gardens, a child's garden and a breathtaking vista from the terrace.

  • Cosmopolitan Intrigue
Eight gardens within a single spellbinding property await discovery in this Luther Greene masterpiece. Lavish fountains, topiary hedges, a Zen garden and a Japanese tea room are among the wonders which surround a delightfully classic Frasier Peters home.

  • Compendium of Westport's Past
Magnificent specimen trees dot the grounds of this historic home dating from 1855, once the home of Supreme Court Justice Abe Fortas. The ground floor interior of the lovingly restored Victorian farmhouse will also be open for viewing. A mature evergreen 'grotto' is another hidden surprise.

  • Rustic Retreat
The sage green of the welcoming Adirondack-style house sets the tone of warmth and woodsiness which characterizes this garden. A perennial plot surrounding stately maples beckons visitors through the front gate. Accenting a charmingly planted pool and cottage areas are vine covered trellises which echo the lines of the house.

  • History in the Making
A sophisticated use of color, form, and texture combines originality with elegant formality in this beautiful Mike Donnally-designed garden. Espaliered fruit trees, woodland glades, colorful perennials, and uniquely adapted annuals provide a dramatic background for the stately Georgian-style home.
  • The committee wishes to thank the property owners for sharing their beautiful gardens, and the many volunteers who help us on the day of the tour.
