Westport Historical Society Summer Camps-a Creative Option for Kids
In Westport, there is no shortage of innovative summer camp opportunities out there for kids-from outdoor adventure and sports camps to music camps and magic camps. One of Westport’s best-kept secrets is Time Travelers, a group of age-appropriate summer camps run by The Westport Historical Society. Now in their sixth year, Time Travelers, co-sponsored with Westport Continuing Education, offers an incredible array of options-from cooking with an organic chef and making your own ice cream to walking tours to special places in Westport to field trips and visits with guest artists.
“These camps are designed to educate and to inspire kids to be kids,” says WHS Director Sue Gold. “We want kids to have fun doing crafts, running through the sprinkler, traveling to fun places and learning new skills, like how to make cool art projects, create new recipes or plant a garden. We also want them to get to know some of the great places and people right in their own backyard.”
To keep the programs fresh, The Westport Historical Society brings in an incredible array of guests to teach during the camps, including local artists, chefs, musicians, farmers, beekeepers, historians and theater professionals. In addition to the onsite visitors, the programs take the kids on behind-the-scenes tours to local venues including The Westport Country Playhouse, The Barnum Museum and Fairfield’s Ogden House.
There are four one-week sessions for boys and girls to choose from. Time Travelers camp descriptions are below.
Explorers for ages 7-11
Explorers III 10 am – 3 pm
August 3 -7 – Mysteries
Exciting activities are in store for you, including code-writing, code-breaking, forensic science and logic puzzles, letterboxing, who-done-its, crafts, drama, cooking and a field trip. Special walking tours and making our own ice cream.
Explorers IV - 10 am – 3 pm
August 10-14 – Time Traveling to Africa
Join us as we uncover this glorious place called Africa by playing games, making crafts, reading maps and map-making, paper mache, walking tours, outdoor games, cooking, a special drumming class, a field trip and more.
TIME TRAVELERS SUMMER PROGRAM
Location: 25 Avery Place, Westport (across from Town Hall)
Time: 10am – 3pm
Each session: Children bring a bag lunch except Fridays, which is Pizza Day. Snacks and all materials are included. Cost: $300 per session, (WHS member), $325 per session (non-member). For more information: contact Hilary or Susan at 222-1424.
